Episode #244: As Everything Unfolds – Vocalist Charlie Rolfe and Guitarist Adam Kerr of 6-Piece Melodic Post-Hardcore Band from High Wycombe, U.K., Debut Album ‘Within Each Lies The Other’ Out Now Via Long Branch Records

The guests for this episode are members of As Everything Unfolds, the 6-piece melodic post-hardcore band from High Wycombe, U.K., vocalist Charlie Rolfe and guitarist Adam Kerr. They just released their debut album Within Each Lies The Other via Long Branch Records on March 26, 2021. From the time that Charlie Rolfe looked for musicians to start a band on an online directory, As Everything Unfolds have quickly become a band creating quite the buzz in the metal world while becoming a family of their own. Charlie and Adam run through the creation of As Everything Unfolds and the lessons about life and music they went through growing in adulthood as a band. With a mix of beautiful melodies over edgy riffs, Within Each Lies The Other shows the organic talents of the member of As Everything Unfolds. The youthful energy of the band comes out in their music and every part of their public personas as being able to chat with Charlie and Adam made me just fall in love with this band.

For this episode of Renaissance Soul, I’m joined by Dave Stephens, founding member and vocalist of the Troy, Michigan metalcore band We Came As Romans, as we talk about their debut album To Plant A Seed. Originally released on November 3, 2009 via Equal Vision Records, a deluxe edition of the album was released on January 18, 2011 which includes one bonus track and a DVD titled To Plant a DVD. In covering this monumental debut album, we talk about the beginnings of the band through their early touring and their two EPs, Dreams and Demonstrations, both self released in 2008 before getting signed to Equal Vision. We also go track-by-track throughout the album and Stephens shares any stories he has about the song or making of it.

The guests for this episode are members of the Finnish melodic death/doom metal band Mariana’s Rest, vocalist Jaakko Mäntymaa and guitarist Nico Mänttäri. As they were still trying to find their sound, they feel like they are finally at that point with their newest album Fata Morgana, out now via Napalm Records. This album, which takes a journey into the realms of isolation, took on a new meaning as the band and the whole world went into quarantine as a global pandemic spread. During our conversation, we talked about the making of Fata Morgana and how this album represents a monumental landmark creatively for the band, along with diving into the culture of their homeland Finland and much more.

The Devil In Me is the second time she collaborated with her son Richard Tuckey after 2019’s No Control, a decision made after both their touring schedules were cancelled due to the pandemic.

The first time I saw Teresa was on a Crazy Woke Asians show put on by past guest Kiki Yeung. During our chat, we talk about her Midwest upbring, her YouTube show, sex work, sex education, working for Hustler Magazine, bad relationships, and so much more! Teresa Lo is always a fun person to chat with!

Based on the grunge influences of her teens like Nirvana and Jesus and Mary Chain, this new face of Detroit’s rock scene hits it out of the park with DOOMPOP, a collection of dark and melancholy songs that’s dips into the psyche of the young singer/songwriter during those formative years approaching inevitable adulthood. Together, we go through each track talking about the stories behind them, along with life before writing DOOMPOP, and the making of this album.

It was such a fan interview and she really got me smitten! We talk about why I wanted her on the podcast and how sex workers and sex educators helped me find myself. We also talk about the benefits that sex therapy could have on society if embraced more, plus a whole lot of flirting.

For this episode of Renaissance Soul, I’m joined by indie singer, songwriter, arranger, producer, and all around jack of all music trades, Fred Thomas, band leader of Saturday Looks Good To Me as we talk about their 2003 album All Your Summer Songs. Coming from the Ypsilanti/Ann Arbor area, Fred Thomas’ contributions to the Michigan music scene are just as prevalent in Detroit. With a couple local releases for Saturday Looks Good To Me in 2000, All Your Summer Songs was the first real album for this project of Thomas’ – released via Polyvinyl Record Company in 2003.

Originating in Brazil, Nervosa has a whole new line-up – featuring Prika along talented new members Diva Satanica on vocals, Mia Wallace on bass, and Eleni Nota on drums – all hailing from various parts of Europe. Nervosa has a series of videos on YouTube (shown below) to get everyone up to speed and introduce you to the new members. During our chat, we talk about the new album with a new lineup, being a role model to young women, and the realities living in Brazil, along with so much more.
