Episode #100: Masta Ace – Brooklyn Hip-Hop Legend

Fresh is the Word Podcast - Episode 100 - Masta Ace

EPISODE #100: MASTA ACE – IN THIS EPISODE:

It’s here! Episode #100! For this landmark episode, I wanted to get someone special, someone whose work has been important to me over the years. After contacting a shortlist of names, I landed on two people that fit the part, Brooklyn hip-hop legend Masta Ace and Detroit techno pioneer Carl Craig (for episode #101). In the almost three years I’ve been doing Fresh is the Word, I never knew what it would become or how long it would last. I’m at least happy that I’ve got to 100 episodes and I’m still trooping on. There’s much more room to grow and I hope episode #100 is the newest jumping off point into the next phase of this show. I have so many people to thank for their help along the way, but too many to name here (I’ll tag you on Facebook, haha). This is only the beginning.

During my chat with Masta Ace, we talked about his place in hip-hop history and how influential he’s been to other emcees, his career has the hip-hop era’s changed, the effect of his 2001 release The Disposable Arts, dealing with being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis back in 2000 and how he keeps his health in check, and the changes in hip-hop throughout the past generations. Masta Ace has a new album A Breukelen Story with producer Marco Polo set to be released on out Nov 9th, 2018.

Each episode, the guest is asked to suggest someone from their life/career that should be on Fresh is the Word that would have good stories to tell. Masta Ace chose one of his long time collaborators, the hip-hop artist Stricklin.

THE FRESH PICK OF THE WEEK:

This episode’s pick is the new album Cerebral Apex from Detroit hip-hop artist Noveliss, a member of the group Clear Soul Forces. Noveliss is a bit of a pioneer in his own right by paving his own lane. While he dives into your classic hip-hop boom bap sounds, he injects his own interests into his rhymes. The album is based off of a Manga book that Noveliss is currently writing and would love this to be the soundtrack in its Anime form one day. Noveliss is the type of artist that wants to use hip-hop to bridge the gap with the nerd fandoms and artforms. Cerebral Apex is a great effort in bridging that gap in a very cool way where it’s accessible to audiences of all sorts and all ages.
