Episode #233: Fenrier – Drummer of Varg, Pagan Metal Band from Coburg, New Album Zeichen Out Now Via Napalm Records

The guest for this episode is Fenrier, drummer the Pagan Metal band Varg from Coburg, Germany, who just released a new album Zeichen via Napalm Records. With this seventh full length release, Varg go back to their Pagan Metal roots, and in my discussion with Fenrier, we talk about the band’s vision for this album and their origins. We also go into Pagan history and how that is perceived in Germany, along with how his home place has been dealing with the pandemic along with social issues like the Black Lives Matter movement. It was great to almost exchange notes on the similarities and differences between our respective societal and political climates. It’s always fun to learn about different cultures through music and this episode with Fenrier is a good piece of education.

Episode #231: LP Giobbi – Oregon-born, Los Angeles-based DJ, Producer, Creator of Femme House, Co-Owner of Animal Talk, New EP Playing My Role Out Now

The guest for this episode is the Oregon-born, Los Angeles-based DJ and producer LP Giobbi. She just released her new EP Playing My Role (featuring Hermixalot) via Thrive Music, the follow up to her summer club smash “Meet Again” (featuring Little Boots). LP is co-owner of Animal Talk, a hybrid publishing company (a joint venture with Third Side Music), event brand, traveling party and artist collective she co-founded with GRAMMY-nominated electronic duo SOFI TUKKER. LP also founded FEMME HOUSE, an educational platform created to address the lack of representation and equity in electronic music by empowering women to learn the language of the studio. During our chat, we talked about her upbringing in music, becoming a DJ and producer, and linking up with SOFI TUKKER. We also get into her motivation in starting FEMME HOUSE and the reasons it important to continuously fight for representation and equity in electronic music.

We talk about the new album, the importance of being a Black woman fronting metal band, her musical influences, the cathartic nature of heavy metal, releasing this album during the Black Lives Matter movement.


Episode #227: Meryem Saci – Algerian Refugee, Now Montreal-Based Singer, Songwriter, and Emcee, New EP All In Available Now

The guest for this episode is Meryem Saci, who is a soulful singer, songwriter, and emcee raised in Algeria and escaped as a refugee to Canada back in 2000. Based in Montreal, she has a new EP titled All in that she released via her Bandcamp back in May. During our chat, we talked about growing up in Alergia and what finally caused her to flee from her wartorn home with her family to Canada. We also talk about her music upbringing, her influences, and about her new EP.

The guest for this episode is Drew Dixon, the accomplished former Vice President of A&R at Arista Records, a former Director of A&R at Def Jam Recordings, the former General Manager of John Legend’s independent label Homeschool Records, and the former manager of recording artist Estelle. Dixon is the center subject of the HBO Max Docuseries On The Record, which presents her powerful haunting story as she grapples with her decision to become one of the first women of color, in the wake of #MeToo, to come forward and publicly accuse hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons of sexual assault.

The guest for this episode is comic book creator and writer Todd Black, who just launched a Kickstarter campaign for issue #3 of his anime-style comic Tokyo Blade Detectives. Episode #223: Trilogy Beats – Detroit Photographer Documenting Black Lives Matter Protests

The guest for this episode is Detroit photographer Trilogy Beats, who has currently been out on the streets documenting the protests surrounding the Black Lives Matter civil right movement in and around Detroit, Michigan. He’s an acclaimed photographer with clients around the nation and globe, shooting for lifestyle brands and more. During our chat, we talked about his motivation to hit the streets with his camera to shoot what’s really going on during the current protests, and in particular, the protests that happened on July 10th at McNichols & San Juan in Detroit after the Detroit Police shot and killed Hakim Littleton. We also discuss his work as a photographer, how he broke into to the industry, and how he was able to obtain clients.


Episode #222: Joyce Marie Fitzpatrick and Brian Shackelford – Producers/Directors of the Film The Color of Medicine: The Story of Homer G. Phillips Hospital About the First All-Black Hospital Located in St. Louis

The guests for this episode are Joyce Marie Fitzpatrick and Brian Shackelford, the co-producers and co-directors of the documentary The Color of Medicine: The Story of Homer G. Phillips Hospital. This documentary sheds a light on the disparity between the medical treatment that the African-American community receives as opposed to others; something that we are really seeing these days with the COVID pandemic and the recent Black Lives Matter protests.


Episode #221: J-Zone – Drummer, Author, Producer, and Former Rapper, New 7″ Single from The Du-Rites Available Now

My guest this episode is drummer, producer, author, and former rapper, J-Zone. We talk about his new 7” single from his project The Du-Rites with Tom Tom Club guitarist Pablo Martin along with his transition from being a rapper to solely being a drummer/producer. A lot of the frustrations and lack of passion that J-Zone talks about with being a rapper is very interesting and something that I think a lot of people feel in their own creative spaces. Being someone that has been a jack-of-all-trades type person also in the past, his perspective on that and focusing more on specific trades really hit home with me, so this interview is a great listen for anyone in any artistic space.

My guest today is Certified Sex Educator, writer, speaker, pleasure advocate, author of Curvy Girl Sex, and creator of LadyCheeky, Elle Chase, who was suggestion from previous guest Anne Hodder-Shipp (happy birthday Anne!). We got into the importance of sex education and to normalize it along with body positivity and so much more. It was a great chat and Elle Chase continually spreads information about sex-positive education and most recently, resources for accountability and actions for black lives.

The guest for this episode is hip-hop, culture, and film writer and podcaster and proud Bostonian, Dart Adams. Having written for publications like HipHopWired, KillerBoomBox, NPR, Mass Appeal, Complex, and Okayplayer, among others, a collection of his writing was recently featured in the book Best Damn Hip Hop Writing: The Book of Dart via Superchamp Books. And before my interview with Dart Adams, I get into the topic of death with my thoughts about recent harassment and killing of black people in America along with the passing of Japanese wrestler Hana Kimura.

After a successful Kickstarter launched in December 2016, Sweeney just released her first graphic novel called Eat, and Love Yourself via Boom! Studios, a 150-page story about eating disorders, depression, body dysmorphia, and ultimately self-love; a subject really important to her. She is also the illustrator on the Marvel Action: Captain Marvel comic book via IDW/Marvel. She shared with us her long journey to the release of Eat, and Love Yourself, along with her transition of moving from the southwest of France to Montreal and much more.

The guest for this episode is award-winning journalist and media entrepreneur, Katherine Goldstein. In 2017, she created and also hosts The Double Shift podcast, a show that uses storytelling to fundamentally transform how society sees mothers and how we see ourselves in order to achieve greater parity for women in all aspects of society.
